I'm interested in Ally for its hardware but man, I cannot imagine how painful Win11 on a 6" screen is. Dismissing that as "general Windows hate nonsense" is nonsense in itself. I'm also typing this on a Asus notebook running Win11, so I know the quality of Amory Crate and MyAsus software firsthand. Windows just has so many quirks here and there that it can't even run on Microsoft's own hardware properly. I have a 12" Surface tablet and using that exclusively without type cover is almost impossible. I'd say that both points can have some merit but Windows 11 runs well on these AMD APUs and isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be on this form factor. Plus there's the general Windows hate nonsense, how it's bloated or can't work well on a gaming handheld. Now MS left all touchscreen ambitions behind with Win11, even though they still make Surface products. In Win10 it was at least optional whether the start menu is a regular one or fullscreen. In Win11 the "All apps" button in the start menu is ridiculously tiny even on that 12" screen, as are the systray icons and the icons in the Explorer sidebar. It was also the time of Windows Phone 8 and there was probably some cross-pollination at Microsoft. Honestly I feel like Windows 8 as shit as it was, was probably the best OS Microsoft released in terms of catering to touchscreens. It shows that some people just short-circuit when someone speaks positively about the Ally hardware but also about potentially running Linux on it. Even a completely neutral statement about AMD improving the Linux driver situation for that chipset was downvoted. Probably because the Ally "community" isn't as wholesome as it thinks it is. Ally coming out means Steam has to respond with something better, and so on and so forth. All of us probably buy most of our games on Steam which means that we don’t have to buy games again. Two thing that’s worth noting though, even though this feels like a Console War. People have preferences and they make purchasing decisions based on those trade offs. I use all Apple products, and many of my PC friends give me a hard time. The polarization across platforms has always existed. Also, the additional power means I can get a manageable to play games even portable without having to mess with settings to get games to work. I do love the simplicity of SteamOS, but enough games I want to play only run on Windows. Hardcore Console Enthusiasts - very opinionated.īefore anyone says that the Steam Deck isn’t a Console, it’s definitely being conveyed as one in it’s positioning, and implementation. Hardcore Linux Enthusiasts - very opinionated I agree with this, but the Steam Deck has a very specific perfect storm.
